Ozols On Watercolor: Traditional Technique & Historical rules for paint application. The result is a rare glimpse into living Art History

Wall of Watercolors by Auseklis Ozols. Currently installed at Indra Botanica. 2022

These paintings are done with classic watercolor technique, where the whites and lights are the paper itself. No added opaque pigments. This is the same technique used by Winslow Homer and John Sargent. -Auseklis Ozols

Utilizing these guidelines are part of what makes watercolor such a challenging medium. Each piece is created as a result of time spent preparing with study and practice. Painters who work this way immediately start the painting over on a new sheet of paper if an accidental spill of shadow moves into an area reserved for light. Understanding the hierarchy of the value scale as it applies to color and color temeperature is especially important in order to reach individual goals. (Saskia)
